The Internet: A Human Right?

Please see below,

This looks like a worthwhile event and should take to digital participation debate to a wider audience.

John Crawford

Event - The Internet: A Human Right?

Monday 4 August, 15:40 (1 hr), at Stand in the Square (St Andrews Square, Edinburgh).Tickets £5.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh’s recent report into digital participation in Scotland called on Governments to respect and protect our rights and freedoms online, as well as offline.

The internet has unleashed the power of information. Digital tools and technologies have the potential to make all of the world’s information available to all of us. This democratisation of information could create an infinite number of opportunities, but it is clear that dangers abound. As corporations and governments increasingly exploit the growing power of information, while limiting access by others, issues of freedom of speech, surveillance, anonymity, privacy and trust are being fundamentally transformed.

Part of the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas 2014 programme of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Professor Michael Fourman, Chair of the RSE’s Inquiry, will lead a lively discussion in which we ask what rights should individuals, businesses and the State have to collect and use information? What are the responsibilities of a digital society to shape and regulate the online world such that our rights and freedoms are respected and protected in digital spaces? And what does all of this mean for people who are not online?

We hope that you can join us for this event. Tickets are available on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe website.
