Conference Announcement – 5th Information: Interactions and Impact (i³), 23-26 June 2015

The 5th Information: Interactions and Impact (i³), 23-26 June 2015 at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland has been announced. It is a biennial event.

This is a great conference and I've put the dates in my diary as I plan to attend plus hopefully present a paper based on the PhD by Published Works that I'm starting next month at Edinburgh Napier University.

i³ focuses on the quality and effectiveness of the interaction between people and information and how this interaction can bring about change.

Conference themes include:

  • the quality and effectiveness of user/information interactions (e.g. information literacies);
  • patterns of information behaviour in different contexts (e.g. creativity, ethics, surveillance, ownership, information recycling/reuse);
  • the social, cultural and economic impacts of engagement with information, including the assessment of impact;
  • the value of information and knowledge as enablers of resilience and change in organisations and communities.

Further details are available on our i³ 2015 website – http://www.rgu.ac.uk/i3conference2015.  If you would like to register your interest and receive further alerts, please email the conference team at i3information@rgu.ac.uk.

You can also follow i3 conference activities and news on Twitter i3 conference

Hope to see a few of the Community of Practice members there.

Health sessions help people online

I came across a small item of news in last month's CILIP Update about an initiative at York Libraries 'helping people living in the city find information about health matters'. What's great about this piece of news is that

'the NHS Helath Online sessions have been taking place in a number of the city's libraries, offering not just access to accurate health information but also teaching the skills needed to find it'.

This is great news and the sort of exemplar I was looking for my book chapter Information literacy in health management. As the article says 'combining information literacy training with the sessions should help equip those attending with skills they need to search independently in the future.'

Well done to York Libraries.

Information literacy and your work - a CILIP survey

Clearing up my desk and office floor and came across several articles about information literacy that I thought people would be interested about including the results of the CILIP Information Literacy survey (CILIP UPDATE April 2013 pp32-33).

I haven't got time to write in full about the survey and it's findings at the moment but I was pleased to see in the final article section 'So what is CILIP going to do next' that information literacy is to remain a priority and advocacy work will be carried out.

"So what is CILIP going to do next?
Information literacy will remain a priority area for at least the next two years. We are working on policy statements to help support our advocacy work with key stakeholders, and we will continue to fight for a place at the table where information literacy matters are being discussed.
We will continue to make timely press statements and comment on the work and research of other organisations who have influence on policy makers and educators in the information literacy arena. We will also follow developments in other national frameworks to inform our own advocacy and look within the profession to improve our understanding of information literacy and its importance to professional work.
This is a huge task, and it would not be possible without the support of our colleagues on the Information Literacy Steering Group and the Information Literacy Group whose strong national and international presence continues to provide us with the expert knowledge of information literacy and its application across the various sectors."
